Every man’s disease is his personal property” – Alonzo Clark (1807–1887). As we move into a new decade, the paradigm for the care of type 2 diabetes continues to evolve. Recent years have seen the introduction of new classes of pharmacological agent, new NICE guidelines and revised QOF indicators. With some of the established glucose-lowering agents nearing the end of their exclusivity, the economic landscape of diabetes care is also set to undergo change in the near future.
As a backdrop to all these developments, though, modern diabetes management is typified by the strong desire to offer an individualised, appropriately tailored programme of care to each and every person with type 2 diabetes – and we
have therefore chosen to focus these educational conferences on this aspect of the service we provide. Whether it is at the level of basic diabetes pathogenesis informing oral agent selection, the approach taken for clinically complex groups, or at the level of the overall “whole package of care”, the approach to type 2 diabetes can be personalised.
